OMB asks who can make the 86 essential medicines in the United States

Friday’s Federal Register notice is a request for information, not an award. Replies are due 26 October. It covers the finished dose, the active ingredient and the starting material, in the United States or near shore.

On Friday the Office of Management and Budget published a request for information in the Federal Register. It wants to know who has new or idle plant, in the United States or near shore, that can make finished doses, active ingredients and key starting materials for the 86 essential medicines on the ASPR list. Replies are due on 26 October 2026. The document is 2026-19646, at 91 FR 60983.

The notice

Bloomberg reported the same day that the administration wants those medicines made in the United States within 18 months, and that a committee will pick the strongest ideas from industry. That timeline is Bloomberg’s account. The notice itself is market research. It does not award a contract, and it does not name a plant.

OMB says the replies will be shared with federal agencies that buy essential medicines, or that are responsible for the domestic base for essential generic drugs. The list is the ASPR 86, from the first entry through voriconazole at number 86. The notice asks for capacity that exists or is idle. It does not order anyone to build it.
