The Industrial Brief · No. 36
Design for the plant you actually have
The digital thread as a management system, dual-region bills of materials, and first article as strategy.

Editor’s note
Most late launches are not manufacturing failures. They are design failures that manufacturing is asked to absorb. This week’s briefing is about closing that loop before the tooling is cut.
01 · Design
First article is a management system
The plants that are fast have folded FAI into the digital thread: the characteristic the designer dimensioned is the one the CMM reports and the MES holds. When that loop is closed, engineering change stops being a negotiation.
Why it matters. The cheapest chamfer is still on a screen. Put a manufacturing engineer on the model before industrial-design freeze.
02 · Supply chain
Multi-region is capex, not a slogan
China+1 meant Vietnam and hope. Multi-region means two sets of moulds, two PPAP packs, and a materials engineer in each bloc. Boards are accepting a lower ROIC in exchange for a plant that still ships.
Why it matters. If the second region cannot make the part when the first is closed, you have a warehouse with a flag.
03 · Production
Pilot lines that never graduate
Battery manufacturing has no shortage of pilots. It has a shortage of pilots that become plants. Standard automation stacks — Siemens and Battery-NY among them — are an attempt to stop rewriting the MES every time the cell format changes.
Why it matters. Repeatability, not chemistry, is the gap between a university cell and a gigafactory.
Deep dive
Deep dive — The file is the part
Additive makes the point brutally. If PLM cannot carry build parameters, heat-treat, and inspection with the geometry, you will print scrap at a high hourly rate. Conventional manufacturing has been able to hide the same failure behind tribal knowledge on the line. Dual-sourcing and regional plants take the hiding place away.
Treat supplier process capability as a design input, the way you treat a material spec. Refuse to release a drawing that cannot be inspected the way it was dimensioned. This is not software philosophy. It is how you stop paying for the same lesson on every programme.

If your manufacturing engineers first see the product when the tooling is already cut, you do not have a digital thread. You have email.
