Stellantis stops the Fiat 500 line at Mirafiori for ten days

Stellantis will stop the Fiat 500 line at Mirafiori from 19 to 30 October. The stop covers the electric car and the hybrid. Management told union representatives at the body shop. La Stampa and Il Sole 24 Ore both had it on Tuesday.

The unions’ count is 1,074 people: 934 on the line and 140 staff. They will be on cassa integrazione, the Italian wage-support scheme, for those ten working days. It is not a closure notice. It is another planned halt at a plant that has already stopped and started through the summer.

The company’s line, given to Il Sole 24 Ore, is that this is a complex situation despite the investment and despite output doubling on last year. La Stampa reported the same doubling, and a more specific claim: in the first half Mirafiori built more cars than in the whole of 2025. In February the company put on 600 people and later started a second shift, on the back of the hybrid.

Why a busier plant is still stopping

The hybrid was supposed to be the fix. Late last year Stellantis put a hybrid 500 back on the Mirafiori line beside the electric car, after the battery version had left the plant short of work. The public target for 2026 has been about 100,000 cars, both versions. Europe chief Emanuele Cappellano said in the spring that the first quarter had produced 15,000, and that the rate was rising. He did not confirm the 100,000.

The stops did not end when the second shift started. In June the line halted for lack of parts, engines among them. July stopped again. September stopped again. La Stampa tied those gaps to the supply chain, and in particular to Teksid at Carmagnola, which casts for the hybrid and has been asked to follow a volume the assembly plant could not hold steady. A line that doubles and then waits on a foundry is not a line a buyer can schedule against.

Stellantis has also told the unions it is asking Rome and the region for an energy price in line with Spain and France, and that nothing concrete has come of it. Fiom’s reading, reported by La Stampa, is blunter: output is below what was expected, and without new models the plant is exposed. Those are two different explanations. One is the price of a kilowatt-hour. The other is that Mirafiori still has one product.

For anyone who buys the 500, or who supplies the line, the October dates are the fact. Body shop down from the 19th to the 30th. A thousand people off the clock for a fortnight. Volume this year is higher than last year and still not continuous. The next model has not been named.
